Alaska Warrior Partnership

Alaska Warrior Partnership™ (AKWP) is a veteran-focused, community-led initiative to proactively connect with all veterans and ensure access to quality resources and opportunities available in collaboration with the community. Alaska boasts the highest veteran population per capita with more than 65,000 calling Alaska home. The state also hosts one of the largest military installations in the country and while there is a well-knit support structure for active duty and their families; that support structure becomes disjointed and not easily navigated when our service members become veterans. There is a plethora of support and opportunities in Alaska, but many are not aware of them or the benefits they’ve earned.  Likewise, veteran organizations and other community offerings do not have the capacity or can be unaware of how to connect with veterans.

AKWP is standing by to serve veterans, their families, and caregivers in Alaska. Coordinated assistance with veterans’ benefits and connections to local and national resources are just a call away!

Founder’s Story

November 2001 I was serving in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces, where I endured several traumatic incidents that, at the time, did not seem to affect my relationships with my family, friends, and colleagues. However, a short time after my first deployment, things began to change; a life-threatening situation occurred during the same period where I lost two friends in my unit due to suicide. All of a sudden, I found myself acting violently towards my family, friends, and myself.

During this period, our family ended up getting a rescued pit bull named Cheyenne, who saw so many of my outbursts. Ultimately things got worse before they got better, and I began contemplating suicide because I just wanted the pain to end. In the end, it was Cheyenne and her presence that took my focus off the pain and made me reconsider living.

Immediately I felt so relieved, like someone had taken a 10,000-pound weight off my chest. My family and friends noticed a significant change in my behavior – a reduced number of outbursts, a better attitude, and my decision not to commit suicide – all because of this little pit bull puppy. Cheyenne gave me a purpose and someone else to live and care for.

Following these incidents, I was diagnosed by the Department of Veterans Affairs with having Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression.

In 2009, I set out on a mission to share my personal struggles and how this new companion had helped me overcome them, with fellow military Veterans, active duty military, law enforcement, first responders, Gold Star families, those who have PTSD, TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) or Military Sexual Trauma (MST.) My hope and prayer is that Companions for Heroes (C4H) will aid them in their recovery and, at the same time, save our nation’s shelter and rescue animals. This is two lives served.

Today I live with my son, Dax, and daughter, Mabel, along with our rescued Service Dog Darby.

Mission Statement

Defenders of Freedom provides donors with the organization they need to support post 9/11 Veterans in their transition to civilian life through emergency financial assistance, morale building programs, and traumatic brain injury treatment.

 

Our Story

Defenders of Freedom (DOF) was founded in 2004 by Donna Cranston. As the mother of a warrior deployed in Iraq, Donna combined her personal experiences as a military mom with her passion and desire to help our Veterans succeed with honor as they returned home. Raised in a family that instilled patriotism, Donna began her journey working with Veterans by sending care packages overseas to the Troops and participating in the Welcome Home a Hero program at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport. This program supported the Army’s Rest and Recuperation program for weary Soldiers who came home for 2 weeks during their yearlong tour. Donna attended her first DFW greeting in June of 2004, and it changed her life forever. Through these activities and the unfilled needs that Donna learned from her interactions with Veterans, she founded Defenders of Freedom as an avenue to connect the community to service members. Most Americans support our Troops, but just don’t know how they can help. They just needed a tangible way to participate. DOF began providing assistance to Veterans by sending care packages and providing emergency financial assistance to those that returned with disabilities and were badly in need. Donna listened to these men and women and responded to their needs. DOF expanded its services to include an evidence-based approach to treating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in Veterans.

TBI is the signature wound for post 9/11 Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and historically, very little had been done to successfully treat the injury. Defenders of Freedom identified a solution to this debilitating injury and is committed to helping Veterans get this life changing treatment. Functional neurology is proving to improve the lives of the Veterans we put through the program. We believe it might be the most effective tool in combatting suicide among post 9/11 Veterans.

DOF serves both male and female Veterans who have deployed to the middle east. We have worked with Veterans across 32 states. Veterans are referred to us from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), crisis hotlines, local social service providers, and by word-of-mouth from other Veterans.

According to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, TBI is a significant health issue which affects service members and Veterans during times of both peace and war. This condition is estimated to have affected 370,000 service members since 2000. For every soldier killed since 2003, seven soldiers have been injured. Multiple deployments enhance the chances of leaving a tour with TBI. Many Soldiers make it home from war seemingly outwardly untouched, when in reality they are some of the most debilitated. What we have learned from Veterans is that until they receive proper treatment for a TBI, rather than just prescribed medication to address symptoms, their road to healing is both long and challenging. It is common for DOF to see Veterans who were stellar Soldiers while on active duty, now unable to hold down civilian jobs and have no idea why they are not able to properly function. DOF has worked tirelessly with these Veterans to help them get the care that they need to get them on the right path.

Defenders of Freedom’s primary goals are to provide care and transitional support for our Troops and Veterans, assistance with basic living necessities through short-term emergency financial support, address imminent physical and mental health issues, improve morale, keep Veterans engaged in a supportive community, and to provide access to Veterans with TBI to a comprehensive treatment protocol.

Federally Employed Women (FEW)

What Is FEW?

FEW is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1968 shortly after government issued Executive Order 11375 which added sex-discrimination to the list of prohibited discrimination within the Federal Government. Although E.O. 11375 was an important milestone, several women were concerned that the Civil Service Commission and individual agencies may not put forth the vigorous effort necessary to ensure compliance with E.O. 11375. Although the Federal Women’s Program (FWP) had been established, the early organizers of FEW realized that the government could dismantle FWP, and they wanted to ensure that there would always be an organization dedicated to promoting equality for women and addressing concerns of women in the Federal workforce. Additionally, because FWP is a government function, it is limited in its political scope, and cannot lobby Congress. As a private organization, FEW is not restricted in that area.

As a private organization, FEW works as an advocacy group to improve the status of women employed by the Federal government. This includes contact with Congress to encourage progressive legislation. FEW national officers meet with management officials at all levels of agencies to demonstrate support of the FWP, encourage officials to support the program and to obtain insight on the effectiveness of the FWP at agency and local levels

WHAT FEW IS NOT

FEW is not a labor organization, and therefore does not “represent” employees. However, FEW officers can meet with management officials to discuss matters that fall within their field of interest. Managers and EEO officials may join FEW, and hold local or national office. There is no conflict between being an employee of the FWP and joining FEW. In fact, persons officially charged with FWP responsibilities often work with FEW officers and members to develop goals and objectives for agency programs designed to meet the agency’s needs and to ensure the equality of opportunity for women in the Federal workforce.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

FEW is a three-tiered organization that consist of a National Board, Regions and Chapters. All three tiers work together to fulfill the mission and sets annual goals for FEW including FEW’s four major program areas.

FEW’s membership is open to those who subscribe to the purposes of the organization and carry out its mission. As a grassroots organization, FEW’s vitality and effectiveness are linked to membership. FEW has a specifically defined membership. Members must join, pay dues and support the governing policies and procedures. FEW has a National governing board, a regional governing board and local chapters all around the world. Participation in FEW is not limited to women. Anyone who is concerned about discrimination based on sex and employment opportunities for women in the Federal government is welcome to join FEW.

Grace After Fire

Grace After Fire was first started as The Women’s Heart by Stephanie Moles in 2002, with a focus on increasing access to healthcare services for women Veterans, especially those who struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.

Over time, the leadership of the organization transitioned from Stephanie Moles to retired Air Force Colonel Kim Olson, then to US Navy Veteran Mea Williams.

As Grace After Fire matured, the focus of the organization shifted from the challenges of the woman Veterans to the empowerment of the woman Veteran.  Grace After Fire’s mission became centered on helping the woman Veteran help herself by connecting her with the resources and the tools she needs to be a productive citizen in her community, her work and her home after transitioning from the military.

Ever since 2008, Grace After Fire has been serving the Veteran community by providing community resource navigation services, social events, and annual retreats to women Veterans and their families.  In 2012, Grace After Fire launched the Table Talk Color Me Camo peer-to-peer support group programming designed specifically for women Veterans, and in 2017, Grace After Fire began providing financial basic needs assistance to women Veterans and her family.

The Heroes Linked Story
Heroes Linked was conceived by individuals who had not served in the U.S. military and wanted to actively honor those that did. Servicepersons transitioning out of active duty military have overwhelmingly said that the biggest challenge lying ahead of them is navigating the civilian job market. And their ranks will swell in coming years. Defense cutbacks will push more than 100,000 servicepersons out of the military each year for the next decade, including tens of thousands who expected their service to be a career.

Heroes Linked rests upon the simple premise that Americans who did not serve in the military possess something that is of great value to Veterans and servicepersons transitioning out of the military – their career experiences and knowledge of the private sector job market. The question was, how could such knowledge be best imparted to the thousands that could benefit from it? Understanding the power of personal mentoring for both Advisor and Advisee, the challenge was adapting the model to fit the needs of the swelling Veterans community. The result became Heroes Linked.

Utilizing and array of cutting edge communication technologies, Heroes Linked is disrupting the personal mentoring paradigm to make it accessible, mobile, and scalable.

Heroes Linked recognizes that family is the heart of the U.S. Armed Forces. We welcome Gold Star families and the spouses of our veterans and servicepersons in transition. They deserve to receive the same level of assistance as their loved ones in uniform.

Our Mission
Heroes United to Heal Foundation Inc. has been created for the purpose of raising awareness regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the veteran and first responder communities. The HOPE Project seeks to help bring hope and healing to wounded warriors, first responders, veterans, their families as well as to children, teens and adults who have been abused using horses, most of which have been rescued. The HOPE Project provides free Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Therapeutic Riding, pastoral counseling and resources to those who have suffered trauma and may be battling PTSD.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is the central coordinating agency, providing support, care, advocacy and service to veterans and their families. MVAA was created by Executive Order 2013-2 and began operations on March 20, 2013, the 10th anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

MVAA is a state government agency and is housed within Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The agency works to identify and break down barriers veterans face in employment, education, health care and quality of life, making Michigan a great place for veterans and their families to call home. Unlike the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides health care, educational, compensation and pension benefits, and more, the MVAA assists veterans and their families by connecting them to their federal resources and benefits, as well as those state benefits they have earned. The agency does this by working with various state departments and agencies, as well as hundreds of community-based veteran programs to create a no-wrong-door access to benefits and services.

MilGears exists to help you plan and achieve your goals by highlighting career possibilities and helping you visualize how to reach those goals.

MilGears analyzes your unique history—your military duties and training, civilian education and credentialing, and apprenticeships—to provide customized results. Key features include:

  • Auto-fill based on your uploaded service history document (ETJ, JST, or VMET).
  • Ability to return to where you left off at any time – your progress is saved, but your personal identifying information is not.
  • Easy-to-read summary of your military history that you can keep as a reference.
  • Customized output that includes:
    • Civilian occupations that may be attainable or nearly attainable.
    • Mariner Tool which calculates sea time and displays credentials that may be attainable or nearly attainable.
    • Apprenticeships, certifications, and education that can help you fill training gaps or that could make you more competitive in the job market.

The process is straight forward. EMC looks at what you’ve done to date in the military by guiding you through a series of questions that collect information such as: your rating, pay grade, duty station history, training, qualifications (applicable to Mariner careers), and civilian education or credentials. EMC then takes this information and helps you determine your best path forward by showing you the possible occupation options for which you may be eligible based on your current experience.

M2M analyzes your entries and uploaded service records for creditable sea service, training, and assessments that you completed during your military service and compares your results against the standard for an original or upgraded Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). The results section details which credentials you may be able to pursue based on your specific military experience.

CSWF guides you through a series of questions that allow you to view how closely your qualifications align with the requirements for specific CSWF work roles within the Navy, highlighting any gaps that need to be filled to become qualified for a role. Additionally, it lets you view related civilian occupations so you can plan for post-service employment that will use the skills you have honed during your time in service.

CSWF is based on the qualification matrices found on Navy COOL, which were developed to ensure that Sailors working in Cyber IT and Cybersecurity meet defined qualification requirements to serve in those roles. The DON model is consistent with the DOD Cyber Workforce Framework (DCWF), both are based on cybersecurity work roles outlined in the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) framework. The NICE framework is a result of a partnership between government, academic institutions, and the private sector working to develop a common language to describe cybersecurity work regardless of where the work is performed.

Military Transition Roundtable (MTR)

Many military personnel today are frustrated with the transition process. Stories of submitting dozens, if not over hundreds of resumes, with no response are not uncommon. While Department of Defense (DoD) and non-military transition programs are focused on the skills required to transition, they have not resolved this frustration.

 

Our MasterMind cohorts take like-mined individuals who will meet on a regular basis to share challenges, receive feedback/ideas, and discuss/refine action plans. Our goal in this program is to build an accountability group within cohorts. The MasterMinds group would be implemented as “Top Off” and “Capstone” programs that would augment and enhance the current DoD provided Transition Assistance Programs

Military Warriors Support Foundation

Our mission is to provide programs that facilitate a smooth and successful transition for our nation’s combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star families. Our programs focus on housing and homeownership, recreational activities, transportation assistance and leadership development. Through select programs, we have awarded nearly 900 mortgage-free homes and payment-free vehicles to combat-wounded heroes, Gold Star spouses and their families in all 50 states. In addition to the home or vehicle, the families receive family and financial mentoring.

Our Programs:
H.O.P.E. 4 Heroes
We are excited to introduce a new opportunity for female veterans. HOPE House is a shared living environment, which will serve three female veterans while they pursue vocational training or a higher education. The low-cost monthly fee will ease the stress of higher rent payments, allowing them to focus on a new direction for their lives.

In addition to safe and secure living quarters, veterans will be provided a life financial mentor. Working together to develop a plan, the mentor and veteran will communicate monthly, reviewing budgets, credit reports, savings goals, and exploring new opportunities, while setting goals for lifelong success.

Requirements to Apply:
1. Must be a female veteran.
2. Must be actively enrolled in a vocational school

Transportation 4 Heroes
Awards payment-free vehicles to veterans wounded in direct combat with an enemy force & unmarried Gold Star spouses who’s loved one was killed-in-action. In addition to the vehicle, the recipient will receive 1-year of family and financial mentoring.

Requirements to Apply:
1a. Must be a veteran wounded during combat (Purple Heart recipients given priority) or wounded during combat training from any American military conflict.
1b. Must be an unmarried Gold Star Spouse of a veteran who was Killed-In-Action or Killed during combat training.
2. Must be honorably retired or separated from the military or within 90 days of discharging.
3. Must be able to obtain vehicle insurance.
4. Must not have more than 1 vehicle loan/lease per household.

Homes 4 Wounded Heroes & Homes 4 Gold Stars
Awards mortgage-free homes to veterans wounded in direct combat with an enemy force & unmarried Gold Star spouses whose loved one was killed-in-action. In addition to the home, the recipient will receive 3-years of family and financial mentoring.

Requirements to Apply:
1a. Must be a veteran wounded during combat (Purple Heart recipients given priority) or wounded during combat training from any American military conflict
1b. be an unmarried Gold Star Spouse of a veteran who was Killed-In-Action or killed during combat training
2. Must be honorably retired or separated from the military or within 90 days of discharging.
3. Must intend to use this home as your Primary Residence. Priority will be given to applicants who do not currently have a mortgage

Skills 4 Life
Providing recreational outings and peer-to-peer mentorship to veterans wounded in direct combat with an enemy force & unmarried Gold Star spouses whose loved one was killed-in-action with hunting, fishing and golfing adventures.

At Mission 22, our commitment could not be more personal. Mission 22 was founded by Veterans. Most of our staff are Veterans, spouses of Veterans, or have immediate family members who have served in the US military.

We provide extensive, personalized support and resources to help Veterans and their families thrive. Mission 22’s programs for Veterans and military spouses offer everything from biometric monitoring of stress, sleep, and activity levels; to meditation and coaching; to exercise programs and a wellness supplement regimen; to books and learning resources to help Veterans put their experience in context.

Mission 22 recognizes that a Veteran’s experience is a family’s experience – families live through all of the ups and downs that soldiers returning home do. We’ve developed a support program exclusively for spouses to take positive steps that renew their identities as individuals and the strengths they bring to their household.

Our Ambassador program further supports Veterans and military families – a network of more than 3,500 Veterans and civilians in all 50 states and around the world. We work to advance society’s collective understanding of the issues faced by active service members, Veterans, and their families.

National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS)
To Eliminate Homelessness among Veterans in Central Florida

When we were first founded in 2008, there were approximately 1,800 homeless veterans living in Brevard County. As of January 2018’s Bi-Annual Point in Time Count, Brevard’s population had been reduced to less than 300, an amazing 88% reduction! While we are very proud of the work we have accomplished, we still have a ways to go before we can say mission complete. According to the US Census Bureau there are 4,400 veterans in Brevard County that are in poverty, and so to reach mission complete we have to get all of the homeless housed while at the same time keep the at-risk in their homes.

What makes us truly unique is the fact that we tackle homelessness directly where it exists…on the streets of our community. We proactively go out to find our clients through street level outreach where they live, provide basic needs to ensure their survival and build rapport, and connect them to any organization that offers a service beneficial to them, rapidly moving from homeless to housed.

While being successful at your primary purpose as an organization is the most important factor, it is just as important to be fiscally responsible. That is why we are so proud of our 91% program service ratio for 2021, as well as our continuous Gold Star rating on GuideStar, the trusted leader in non-profit accountability.

Our Mission

The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a national nonprofit organization that has worked since 1981 to ensure that the government delivers to our nation’s 22 million veterans and active duty personnel the benefits to which they are entitled because of disabilities resulting from their military service to our country.

What We Do

Imagine enlisting in the military and proudly serving your country. You put your life on the line each and every day with conviction and courage. Then imagine you are injured or disabled in the line of duty and your country delays or even refuses to provide you and your family with the care or benefits you desperately need and to which you are entitled by law. Unbelievably, this is happening every day to far too many of America’s wounded warriors and their families.

The National Veterans Legal Services Program has worked since 1981 to ensure that the government delivers to our nation’s 22 million veterans and active duty personnel the benefits to which they are entitled because of disabilities resulting from their military service to our country.

Lawyers Serving Warriors®

NVLSP’s Lawyers Serving Warriors® program provides free legal representation to veterans and active duty personnel through a national network of major law firms and corporate legal departments. Through this program, veterans receive free representation in proceedings before military administrative discharge boards, military medical and physical disability evaluation boards, military discharge review agencies, VA regional offices, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, and the courts that review the decisions of these agencies.

Individual Representation

By using their legal expertise, advanced advocacy skills, and extensive knowledge of veterans law, National Veterans Legal Services Program attorneys help veterans free of charge in their battle to secure the proper disability benefits from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the military service departments.

Burn Pits Claims Assistance Program

NVLSP is expanding its representation of veterans to include cases before the VA on claims for service-connected disability benefits for diseases arising from exposure to burn pits overseas. If you or someone you know served on a base where burn pits were used to dispose of paint, medical/human waste, metals, plastics, rubber, etc., and you are currently seeking service-connected compensation for a condition, respiratory or otherwise, that you believe resulted from your exposure to these burn pits, NVLSP may be able to help.

Class Actions

Since its founding, the National Veterans Legal Services Program has used its expertise in veterans law to change the lives of veterans and their families. Through class action lawsuits, NVLSP brings claims on behalf of large groups of individuals who have been wrongfully denied the benefits they have earned through their service to our country.

Training and Mentorship

NVLSP leverages its expertise in veterans law by recruiting, training and mentoring both lawyer and non-lawyer advocates to help veterans secure their hard-earned benefits. NVLSP trains lawyer and non-lawyer advocates to represent veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, arming them with knowledge of veterans law, winning techniques and legal arguments.

Publications

The publication of advocacy materials is designed to both increase the pool of advocates available to veterans and their families, as well as to empower advocates in the effective representation of their clients. NVLSP’s Veterans Benefits Manual, Veterans Benefits Advocacy DVD, The Veterans Advocate and The Basic Training Course on Veterans Benefits are designed to be working tools for veterans’ service officers, attorneys, and others who assist veterans and their families on claims for VA benefits.

MISSION STATEMENT
To create a community that raises awareness and combats suicide by empowering veterans, first responders, and their families through traditional and non-traditional therapies.

History of 22KILL
In 2012, the Veterans’ Administration (VA) released a Suicide Data Report that found an average of 22 veterans die by suicide everyday. The 22KILL initiative started in 2013, at first just as a social media movement to raise awareness, and later became an official 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in July of 2015.

In 2016, as our push-up initiative (later known as the #22pushupchallenge) swept social media, 22KILL began its transformation from awareness to suicide prevention. By the end of that year, the viral campaign, and the fundraising that accompanied it, allowed us to donate over half a million dollars to sponsor other veteran service organizations.

In 2017, 22KILL began to acquire and develop traditional and non-traditional mental wellness programs, and now offers a myriad of services through Stay The Course, Tribal Council, Forge, Wind Therapy, WATCH, and White Star Families.

Our Purpose
Restore the value of life by empowering veterans, first responders, and their families

Prevention begins with awareness. This means educating ourselves and the general public, opening up the conversation, and learning to become comfortable with the uncomfortability and fear of being vulnerable. By doing this, we can identify the often avoided or unaddressed issues that can lead someone to thoughts of suicide, and confront those issues as they come, rather than letting them accumulate into something much worse.

The next step is empowerment. One of the biggest challenges veterans and first responders face is finding a sense of purpose after service. 22KILL has built a vast network of organizations and resources across the country, and whether through its own programs, or through external sources, veterans, first responders, and family members can find services for mental wellness and empowerment programs to help them find or rediscover that sense of purpose. The other side of this is engagement. Often times one may come to realize that all they really needed was the brotherhood and camaraderie that may have been absent from their lives since leaving service. The 22KILL “Tribe” allows service members to connect with like-minded individuals and gives them the opportunity to get involved with community events and projects, and be a part of something great.

Operation Deploy Your Dress

About Us
“ODYD began at Fort Bliss in late 2015, when founders Renee Chapman, Ronya Rendon, Yvonne Coombes, Liz McKenrick and Melissa Riely decided to organize a dress swap among their units’ spouses, as a way to defray the costs associated with purchasing formalwear for holiday balls.

It wasn’t long before the idea became an organization, run entirely by volunteers. With the support of Fort Bliss’ Garrison Command and the Fort Bliss Spouses’ Club, ODYD set up a location next to the thrift shop. Soon, other installations expressed interest, and within one year, ODYD opened at Fort Eustis, VA, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

Panhandle Warrior Partnership

Panhandle Warrior Partnership™ (PWP) is a veteran-focused, community-led initiative to proactively connect with all veterans and ensure access to quality resources and opportunities available in collaboration with the community. The Florida Panhandle is home to one of the largest concentrations of military installations and personnel in the country and while there is a well-knit support structure for active duty and their families; that support structure becomes disjointed and not easily navigated when our service members become veterans. An estimated 100,000 veterans reside in the communities of Northwestern Florida, “The Panhandle”. The larger cities within Northwestern Florida have a variety of support organizations and opportunities, but many veterans, especially in the largely rural areas that span the distance between the Panhandle cities, are not aware of them or the benefits they’ve earned. Veteran organizations are focused on direct services and do not have the capacity to proactively engage the veteran population prior to a need being identified. Additionally, community offerings within the cities can be unaware of what the veterans in the Panhandle are looking for and how to best support them.

PWP is standing by to serve veterans, their families, and caregivers in Northwest Florida. Coordinated assistance with veterans’ benefits and connections to local and national resources are just a call away!

In response, on the night of December 8, 1983, 60 people gathered together to figure out how to help people who were experiencing homelessness in their neighborhoods. On that night, PATH was born.

The group started by distributing food and clothing to people living on the streets. As homelessness continued to grow nationwide, research revealed that Housing First—a best practice model that first connects people to permanent housing and then focuses on stabilization through voluntary supportive services, proved more effective. Now, over thirty years later, we provide services in more than 140 cities in six regions, and have more than 1,500 units of permanent supportive housing completed or in the pipeline.

Across the state, we help people find permanent housing and provide case management, medical and mental healthcare, benefits advocacy, employment training, and other services to help them maintain their homes stably. Since 2013, we have connected more than 9,000 people to permanent homes.

Pets for Vets

The Pets for Vets program is dedicated to providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing them with America’s veterans who can benefit from a companion animal.

Around 920,000 Shelter Animals are Euthanized each year including 390,000 Dogs and 530,000 Cats. These dogs can make excellent companion animals but never have that chance. It is our belief that companion animals can be the life saving therapy or friend that many returning service men and women need.

Medical studies have shown that companion animals significantly improve mental and physical health, including reducing stress, depression and anxiety, symptoms experienced by many serving in the military.

The Pets for Vets team interviews each veteran to ascertain exactly what he or she is looking for in a companion animal; we pair this with his or her personality and lifestyle to make the perfect pet/veteran match. Once the perfect pet is selected for the veteran, he then spends time in the home of our trainer who teaches him basic manners and other valuable behaviors needed to live with his new owner.

Your support helps us match a rescued companion dog (or pet) with an American veteran who would benefit from having a companion. In accomplishing this mission, we do not want to create an additional burden on the veteran; with each dog/veteran match we provide all of the necessary equipment for them to start their new life together. In addition, the pet will be healthy and up to date on all vaccinations. Your donation helps to ensure they have everything they need.

Project Ropa is the only nonprofit organization of its kind in Los Angeles: our mission is to restore dignity and empower the lives of people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles by providing clean clothes, hygiene essentials, and employment opportunities while reducing textile waste and minimizing our carbon footprint.

Our retrofitted van, functioning as a mobile walk-in closet, carries hope as well as a full selection of clothes, shoes, accessories and hygiene products.

To further our mission and help break the cycle of homelessness, we provide transitional job opportunities to people with barriers to employment, including homeless and previously incarcerated individuals.

Purpose Built Families

Purpose Built Families Foundation is a nationally accredited nonprofit delivering preventative and reparative services to overcome foundational barriers to the quest for “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” 

Reparative services are delivered through (1) the agency’s Operation Sacred Trust (“OST”) collaboration disrupting and ending homelessness for thousands of Veterans and (2) Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills(“PAIRS”) classes offered nationwide under the “PAIRS Essentials” and “Warrior to Soul Mate” brands helping couples overcome marital instability. 

Preventive services are delivered to youth and adults – empowering interpersonal relationship competence through a triad of practical, usable skills to improve communication, conflict resolution, emotional understanding and connection.

Purpose Built Families Foundation’s approach is built on fundamental skills and concepts underscored throughout the Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills program, widely known as PAIRS.
People who master the art of war, medicine, law, science, business, and many other noteworthy endeavors typically draw on those same competencies for different missions in life — because that’s what they know.
Over the past half century, fewer and fewer Americans have grown up in families that provided a model for the lives we seek for ourselves and those we love. How would we know how to nurture a stable, healthy relationship between peers, successfully parent children, or sustain feelings of love through life’s natural challenges and transitions if we’ve never seen that happen?
Rarely are the issues that lead to family fragmentation about core values or differences. More often, decisions that have painful, generational consequences for self and loved ones are rooted in an awkward truth: we don’t know what we don’t know.

Semper K9

Semper K9 rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to be service dogs at no cost for disabled service members. Semper K9 recently purchased 33 acres adjacent to Marine Corps Base where they plan to build a retreat-style facility for out of area veterans and their families to come and train with their service dogs.
