Alaska Warrior Partnership

Alaska Warrior Partnership™ (AKWP) is a veteran-focused, community-led initiative to proactively connect with all veterans and ensure access to quality resources and opportunities available in collaboration with the community. Alaska boasts the highest veteran population per capita with more than 65,000 calling Alaska home. The state also hosts one of the largest military installations in the country and while there is a well-knit support structure for active duty and their families; that support structure becomes disjointed and not easily navigated when our service members become veterans. There is a plethora of support and opportunities in Alaska, but many are not aware of them or the benefits they’ve earned.  Likewise, veteran organizations and other community offerings do not have the capacity or can be unaware of how to connect with veterans.

AKWP is standing by to serve veterans, their families, and caregivers in Alaska. Coordinated assistance with veterans’ benefits and connections to local and national resources are just a call away!

American Dream U

Who We Are:
We are dedicated to helping our military members and their spouses in the transition so they can find a successful landing after their service; whether that is higher education, a dream job, or the ability to start their own business.

How We Help:
American Dream U offers two main services for transitioning veterans: Online programs and educational workshop events.
American Dream U’s online programs are catered to helping veterans become successful professionals in the world of business, with breadth in courses; everything from entrepreneurship to the intricacies of setting up a LinkedIn profile.
American Dream U’s workshop events are fueled by the same purpose; offering unique, differentiating benefits when paired with the online courses such as networking and connecting with other veterans, as well as hearing personal success stories of post-service careers.

Who We Help:
Military, Veteran and spouses are our mission and the stats below reflect the need. Here at American Dream U, we believe that a smoother transition will go a long way in improving these stats in the future.

– 2 out of 3 new veterans will find it difficult to transition
– About 400,000 veterans remained unemployed at the end of 2017
– 22 – 28 veterans will commit suicide each day.
– Approximately 245,000 Service men and women will transition out of the military in 2018.

Armed Services Arts Partnership

Our Mission

Cultivate community and growth with veterans, service members, military families, and caregivers through the arts.

Our Story

We believe that trauma and loss breeds creativity and discovery.

The veterans and military families in Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP)’s community prove this point. But, it also holds true for our founder, Sam Pressler. After losing a family member to suicide while in high school, Sam turned to comedic expression to cope. When he later learned about mental health challenges affecting veterans through his college research at William & Mary, Sam felt compelled to act. While at W&M, he launched the country’s first comedy class for veterans, as well as the largest veterans writing group in the Southeast. Within a year, a supportive community formed – one that gave veterans permission to process and express, connect and grow, heal and serve others.

After receiving the Echoing Green Fellowship, Sam converted the student organization into ASAP, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Today, ASAP is thriving in the D.C. Metro area and Hampton Roads, VA, serving thousands of veterans and military families, and empowering its alumni to become artistic leaders in their communities. As a result of our impact in the communities we serve, we have received significant attention. We have performed at The White House, have been featured on a PBS documentary, and have been recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30 list for “Social Entrepreneurship.”

The reintegration of our nation’s veterans is not just a veterans issue. It involves veterans and civilians, community arts organizations and local health providers, military recruiting and VA care. It requires social, physical, and artistic outlets just as much as it demands traditional medical care. Through our collaborative, community-driven, and deeply focused program model, we are forging a new path for veterans to reintegrate into civilian life, and for our communities to welcome them home.

Our Values

Community – We foster lasting, supportive relationships between veterans and civilians alike, transforming those who may feel isolated into a community of friends.

Trust, Honesty & Openness – Through a community rooted in trust, we facilitate an authentic, honest, and constructive dialogue.

Respect – We choose to treat each other as peers, and act as such, despite our differences in experiences and perspectives.

Responsibility – We come prepared to engage, listen, and provide feedback and support.

Creativity – As a community, we embrace the creative process, and fully explore our expressive possibilities.

Humor – We find humor in our jokes, our shortcomings, and our community.

Lifelong Learning – We strive to learn from our instructors, our peers, and ourselves. As we grow as individuals and artists, we also grow as a community.

Center for Veteran Transition and Integration at Columbia University

Over the last decade and a half, Columbia University developed the most sophisticated and successful program at an Ivy League or highly selective private college or university for service members transitioning from the military to undergraduate and graduate education, the workforce, and civilian life.

During this time, Columbia has successfully enrolled more student-veterans than all other Ivy League schools combined, while maintaining a graduation rate above 90% and a record of job and graduate school placement that equals Columbia’s non-veteran graduates.

However, during this same period, it became clear that service members in transition continue to face barriers reaching their potential in accessing higher education and beginning meaningful careers, despite the many effective programs offered to this population. By drawing on the lessons and experiences gained working with service members in transition over the past fifteen years, the Center will be a national center of excellence, focused on ensuring transitioning veterans receive access to world class programming and support designed to maximize their potential in education and the workforce.

Columbia University launched the Center for Veteran Transition and Integration to have a direct and lasting impact on the issue of veteran transition and upward mobility by creating and providing access to the best-in-class tools and programming veterans need as they transition from active service to college and the workforce.

Content Creation
Utilizing a team of educational technologists and instructional designers, the Center creates robust online educational programming that facilitates transition from service to academia and the workforce.

Program Delivery
The Center identifies and partners with universities, employers, and veteran support organizations that are capable of delivering the Center’s research and content directly to transitioning veterans nationally.

National Impact
The Center provides national program management of all educational content and delivery platforms as well as ensures quality control, provide measures of effectiveness, and collects data for follow-on research, program refinement, and additional educational modules.

DoDTAP - Transition Assistance Program

About DoD TAP

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) provides information and training to ensure Service members transitioning from active-duty are prepared for their next step in life – whether pursuing additional education, finding a job in the public or private sector or starting their own business.

TAP is a cohesive, modular, outcome-based program that bolsters and standardizes the opportunities, services and training that Service members receive to better prepare them to pursue their post-military career goals.

The TAP curriculum is an outcome-based curriculum that transforms the way the military prepares Service members for transition back to civilian life. The curriculum is designed to provide Service members with the resources, tools, services and skill-building training needed to meet Career Readiness Standards (CRS). Shortly before departing the military, Service members demonstrate achievement of these standards to their command through a verification process called Capstone. This process includes an opportunity to connect Service members who may need additional assistance to agency partners who provide them with additional support.

The John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act of 2019 (FY19 NDAA) authorized many changes to the TAP, to be implemented late 2019. The purpose of the program will remain the same, but the TAP process will be updated to reflect the requirements in the NDAA.

About the Military-Civilian Transition Office

The DoD Military-Civilian Transition Office (MCTO) formed as a result of a merger between two DoD programs under the Defense Human Resources Activity’s Defense Personnel and Family Support Center to provide streamlined services to members of the armed forces and their families.

The Office for Reintegration Programs (ORP) combined with the Department of Defense (DoD) Transition to Veterans Program Office (TVPO) to efficiently deliver resources to transitioning Service members, members of the National Guard and Reserve, their families and communities worldwide in January 2020.

The DoD Military-Civilian Transition Office (MCTO) is responsible for designing, overseeing, and evaluating TAP. MCTO provides transition assistance policy and program oversight to promote, advance, and instill a culture of career-ready Service members.

Partnering Agencies
In addition to the military departments, the Transition Assistance Program is the result of an interagency partnership between the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Labor (DOL), Department of Education (ED), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in conjunction with the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

U.S. Department of Labor:
• The DOL conducts a one day employment overview that teaches Service members vital skills such as how to build a resume and prepare for an interview. Their contribution to the curriculum also includes the DOL Employment Track and the DOL Vocational Track. After transition, DOL’s local One-Stop Career Centers located across the nation continue to assist veterans in meeting their employment goals through a range of services including job placement, career counseling, and occupational training.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:
• The VA is responsible for educating transitioning Service members on the wide range of veterans’ benefits available to them and assisting with the process of applying for benefits during the transition process. The VA contributions to the TAP curriculum includes the VA Benefits and Services brief. After separation, the VA continues to provide educational and vocational counseling to Service members.

U.S. Office of Personnel Management:
• OPM provides Service members with an overview of Federal employment, the careers offered within the Federal government and a linkage to the kinds of occupations and competencies transitioning Service members and veterans have. It also acquaints transitioning Service members and veterans with resources to support them in obtaining work with the Federal Government, including the Veterans Employment Program Office, which offers career tools such as a Military Skills Translator, a Resume Builder and a federal job search database.

U.S. Small Business Administration:
• The SBA’s “Boots to Business” is the Entrepreneurship Track that helps Service members understand the dynamics involved in developing and sustaining a business. It includes discussion of the key components of a business plan and has information on identifying required resources. It also provides the opportunity for Service members to learn from other business owners. Service members can continue their education with an eight-week online course covering the principles of accounting, finance, market analysis, planning, business operations, sales, and more. SBA’s support for veteran entrepreneurs continues after TAP, providing veterans with counseling and training services, access to capital and preparing them to compete for government contracts.

U.S. Department of Education:
• The ED promotes the success of TAP for Service members and their families by communicating available information and expertise regarding college access, success, and affordability, financial aid and programs specifically sponsored or overseen by ED for the benefit of Service members.

Teamwork

The Florida Veterans Foundation team is one of the hardest working veteran advocate teams in the state of Florida. We are composed of a volunteer Chairman and Board of Directors.

The majority of the Foundation Directors are retired, military disabled veterans who donate over 40 hours per week of their time to assist and help guide Florida’s veterans through a myriad of issues veterans face today. Whether it’s access to healthcare, education, jobs, VA benefits or the like, our Directors are here to help.

Several Directors are trained Veteran Service Officers who know the extent, the meaning and the application of laws that have been passed by Congress in the interests of veterans and their dependents. Our Directors know the rules and regulations adopted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to clarify and implement those laws.

Why is the Global SOF Foundation necessary?
The world is growing more volatile, unpredictable, and threatening. The conduct of war continues to shift: from large-scale clashes between nations to those characterized by unconventional methods, as well as long-term engagements with and against non-state transnational groups. Countering these globally networked threats requires a global “good-guy” network that can innovate and operate at speeds that traditional governments cannot. The Global SOF Foundation (GSF), a non-profi t organization, is forging this “good-guy” network among the world’s special operations forces (SOF). It brings together military, government, industry, and intellectual leaders from around the world for the purpose of advancing the capability and efficacy of SOF.

What does the Global SOF Foundation do?
The GSF fills a critical gap in the national security discourse: leading an effort to link like-minded public and private entities and to increase understanding of the role that Special Operations can play in addressing global security challenges, especially those emanating from unconventional and transnational sources. Heroes Linked

AN INSUFFICIENT PROFESSIONAL NETWORK AND AN UNCLEAR PATH TO EMPLOYMENT ARE TOO OFTEN AN UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE OF MILITARY SERVICE. THIS MUST CHANGE.

65% of veterans are likely to leave their first civilian job within 2 years.

The Heroes Linked Story
Heroes Linked was conceived by individuals who had not served in the U.S. military and wanted to actively honor those that did. Servicepersons transitioning out of active duty military have overwhelmingly said that the biggest challenge lying ahead of them is navigating the civilian job market. And their ranks will swell in coming years. Defense cutbacks will push more than 100,000 servicepersons out of the military each year for the next decade, including tens of thousands who expected their service to be a career.

Heroes Linked rests upon the simple premise that Americans who did not serve in the military possess something that is of great value to Veterans and servicepersons transitioning out of the military – their career experiences and knowledge of the private sector job market. The question was, how could such knowledge be best imparted to the thousands that could benefit from it? Understanding the power of personal mentoring for both Advisor and Advisee, the challenge was adapting the model to fit the needs of the swelling Veterans community. The result became Heroes Linked.

Utilizing and array of cutting edge communication technologies, Heroes Linked is disrupting the personal mentoring paradigm to make it accessible, mobile, and scalable.

Heroes Linked recognizes that family is the heart of the U.S. Armed Forces. We welcome Gold Star families and the spouses of our veterans and servicepersons in transition. They deserve to receive the same level of assistance as their loved ones in uniform.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is the central coordinating agency, providing support, care, advocacy and service to veterans and their families. MVAA was created by Executive Order 2013-2 and began operations on March 20, 2013, the 10th anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

MVAA is a state government agency and is housed within Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The agency works to identify and break down barriers veterans face in employment, education, health care and quality of life, making Michigan a great place for veterans and their families to call home. Unlike the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides health care, educational, compensation and pension benefits, and more, the MVAA assists veterans and their families by connecting them to their federal resources and benefits, as well as those state benefits they have earned. The agency does this by working with various state departments and agencies, as well as hundreds of community-based veteran programs to create a no-wrong-door access to benefits and services.

Services provided by MVAA include:

The Michigan Veteran Resource Service Center (800-MICH-VET) and MichiganVeterans.com website provide one-stop access for veterans and their families seeking information, resources and staff support.

Michigan Veterans Trust Fund grants help combat-era veterans and their families weather unforeseen, temporary financial emergencies.

MVAA’s Discharge Document Retrieval Service provides veterans copies of DD-214 discharge documents.

MVAA’s Vision:

For Michigan to be the place veterans choose to live, raise a family, work and retire.

MilGears - Put Your Future in Gears

MilGears is a customized career-building tool developed to assist you — our military members — while you serve, as they transition, and beyond. Whether you are committed to completing a single enlistment term/obligation or plan to build a career within the military, understanding the pathways towards reaching your personal and professional goals can be daunting. MilGears exists to help you plan and achieve your goals by highlighting career possibilities and helping you visualize how to reach those goals.

MilGears analyzes your unique history—your military duties and training, civilian education and credentialing, and apprenticeships—to provide customized results. Key features include:

  • Auto-fill based on your uploaded service history document (ETJ, JST, or VMET).
  • Ability to return to where you left off at any time – your progress is saved, but your personal identifying information is not.
  • Easy-to-read summary of your military history that you can keep as a reference.
  • Customized output that includes:
    • Civilian occupations that may be attainable or nearly attainable.
    • Mariner Tool which calculates sea time and displays credentials that may be attainable or nearly attainable.
    • Apprenticeships, certifications, and education that can help you fill training gaps or that could make you more competitive in the job market.
    • “How You Stack Up” – a detailed view of how your credentials compare to those typically required for civilian occupations.
    • “Next Steps” – recommendations to fill gaps to enter an occupational field.

The process is straight forward. EMC looks at what you’ve done to date in the military by guiding you through a series of questions that collect information such as: your rating, pay grade, duty station history, training, qualifications (applicable to Mariner careers), and civilian education or credentials. EMC then takes this information and helps you determine your best path forward by showing you the possible occupation options for which you may be eligible based on your current experience.

M2M analyzes your entries and uploaded service records for creditable sea service, training, and assessments that you completed during your military service and compares your results against the standard for an original or upgraded Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). The results section details which credentials you may be able to pursue based on your specific military experience.

CSWF guides you through a series of questions that allow you to view how closely your qualifications align with the requirements for specific CSWF work roles within the Navy, highlighting any gaps that need to be filled to become qualified for a role. Additionally, it lets you view related civilian occupations so you can plan for post-service employment that will use the skills you have honed during your time in service.

CSWF is based on the qualification matrices found on Navy COOL, which were developed to ensure that Sailors working in Cyber IT and Cybersecurity meet defined qualification requirements to serve in those roles. The DON model is consistent with the DOD Cyber Workforce Framework (DCWF), both are based on cybersecurity work roles outlined in the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) framework. The NICE framework is a result of a partnership between government, academic institutions, and the private sector working to develop a common language to describe cybersecurity work regardless of where the work is performed.

Use the Quick Explorer to investigate career pathways based on a specific credential, career goal, or military occupation, or take a brief interest inventory to research careers that align to your interests.

  • Military Occupational Classification Explorer (MOCE) – View ‘best-fit’ pathways based your military occupation. Pathways include academic, industry, apprenticeship, cross-rate opportunities, and post-service employment opportunities.
  • Cyber IT/Cybersecurity Workforce (CSWF) – Research Cyberspace IT / CSWF work roles in which you are interested and find out the qualification requirements for Defense Cyber Workforce (DCWF) roles.
  • Credential Explorer (CE) – Explore career pathways for selected credentials including academic and certifications, US Military Apprenticeship Programs (USMAP), as well as federal licenses.
  • Career Goals Explorer (CGE) – View occupations based on job family, industry, cluster, or pathway.
  • Interests Explorer (IE) – Complete a brief Interest Profiler to view occupational options based on your likes and dislikes.

Military Transition Roundtable (MTR)

Many military personnel today are frustrated with the transition process. Stories of submitting dozens, if not over hundreds of resumes, with no response are not uncommon. While Department of Defense (DoD) and non-military transition programs are focused on the skills required to transition, they have not resolved this frustration.

Our MasterMind cohorts take like-mined individuals who will meet on a regular basis to share challenges, receive feedback/ideas, and discuss/refine action plans. Our goal in this program is to build an accountability group within cohorts. The MasterMinds group would be implemented as “Top Off” and “Capstone” programs that would augment and enhance the current DoD provided Transition Assistance Programs
