Armed Services Arts Partnership

Our Mission

Cultivate community and growth with veterans, service members, military families, and caregivers through the arts.

Our Story

We believe that trauma and loss breeds creativity and discovery.

The veterans and military families in Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP)’s community prove this point. But, it also holds true for our founder, Sam Pressler. After losing a family member to suicide while in high school, Sam turned to comedic expression to cope. When he later learned about mental health challenges affecting veterans through his college research at William & Mary, Sam felt compelled to act. While at W&M, he launched the country’s first comedy class for veterans, as well as the largest veterans writing group in the Southeast. Within a year, a supportive community formed – one that gave veterans permission to process and express, connect and grow, heal and serve others.

After receiving the Echoing Green Fellowship, Sam converted the student organization into ASAP, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Today, ASAP is thriving in the D.C. Metro area and Hampton Roads, VA, serving thousands of veterans and military families, and empowering its alumni to become artistic leaders in their communities. As a result of our impact in the communities we serve, we have received significant attention. We have performed at The White House, have been featured on a PBS documentary, and have been recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30 list for “Social Entrepreneurship.”

The reintegration of our nation’s veterans is not just a veterans issue. It involves veterans and civilians, community arts organizations and local health providers, military recruiting and VA care. It requires social, physical, and artistic outlets just as much as it demands traditional medical care. Through our collaborative, community-driven, and deeply focused program model, we are forging a new path for veterans to reintegrate into civilian life, and for our communities to welcome them home.

Our Values

Community – We foster lasting, supportive relationships between veterans and civilians alike, transforming those who may feel isolated into a community of friends.

Trust, Honesty & Openness – Through a community rooted in trust, we facilitate an authentic, honest, and constructive dialogue.

Respect – We choose to treat each other as peers, and act as such, despite our differences in experiences and perspectives.

Responsibility – We come prepared to engage, listen, and provide feedback and support.

Creativity – As a community, we embrace the creative process, and fully explore our expressive possibilities.

Humor – We find humor in our jokes, our shortcomings, and our community.

Lifelong Learning – We strive to learn from our instructors, our peers, and ourselves. As we grow as individuals and artists, we also grow as a community.

Boulder Crest Foundation

The science behind our mission
Boulder Crest Institute is the world leader in advancing the science of Posttraumatic Growth (PTG).

The science of Posttraumatic Growth was initially described in 1995 after a decade of research and clinical work focused on trauma survivors. UNC-Charlotte professors and psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun discovered that many trauma survivors grew in positive ways in the aftermath of their trauma.

Today, Dr. Tedeschi chairs the Boulder Crest Institute and is dedicated to supporting combat veterans, first responders, and their families. Dr. Tedeschi is supported in this work by the Vice Chair of the Boulder Crest Institute, Dr. Bret Moore, a twice-deployed former Army psychologist.

Transforming lives through training
Our mission: to train people to thrive in the aftermath of their trauma. Boulder Crest’s signature PATHH programs teach our participants how to make peace with their past, live in the present, and begin planning for their future.

Our PATHH programs (Progressive and Alternative Training for Helping Heroes) are based on the science of Posttraumatic Growth (PTG), a process designed to transform times of deep struggle into profound strength and lifelong growth.

strengthening the family connection
Boulder Crest understands the sacrifices and stresses of military and veteran families. We believe that each family member plays a crucial role in the health and wellbeing of the entire family.

Through our signature PATHH programs and Rest and Reconnection (R&R) Stays, families have an opportunity learn more about themselves and each other and rediscover the love and connections that brought them together.

Our history
Boulder Crest was founded by Ken Falke and Julia Falke. Ken spent 21-years in the US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Halfway through Ken’s career, he was severely injured in a parachuting accident and after healing, went on to make over 1000 parachute jumps and lead men and women on thousands of high-risk missions. Ken’s personal story is a great example of Posttraumatic Growth.

During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of EOD warriors were injured and killed on the battlefields. Ken and Julia visited many of the wounded EOD warriors and their families and witnessed firsthand the care they received.

Ken and Julia felt that these brave men and women and their families deserved more support and care than what was available to them. The Falkes started their personal journey of philanthropy by hosting veterans and their families for meals and short stays at their home, but they knew there was more work to be done.

In 2010, the Falkes donated 37 acres of their property and made a substantial financial investment to establish Boulder Crest Foundation.

From this generous act and the tireless efforts from a passionate team of individuals and an incredibly supportive community, Boulder Crest forged ahead developing a new approach to train combat veterans, first responders, and their families to transform their struggles to strength. We call it PATHH — Progressive and Alternative Training for Helping Heroes.

Bronze Star Homes

Bronze Star Homes builds modular homes, ramps and sub-assemblies with universal access to improve the quality of life for our heroes: Veterans. Through our partnership with Purple Heart Homes, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing housing solutions for Service Connected Disabled Veterans, we are able to identify and assist disabled warriors in our local and surrounding communities.

Bronze Star Homes is a disabled veteran owned company that hires and trains veterans to manufacture products to help deserving veterans and the broader community. We build modular homes, additions and modular tiny homes for disabled vets and homeowners with special requirements at the lowest practical cost to the customer while delivering maximum return on investment to our stakeholders and partners. We return a portion of our proceeds to our nonprofit partners to further our impact on the veteran community while investing in our veteran employees to improve their skills and employment opportunities.

Our modular ramps are manufactured to exacting standards, meet ADA standards and can be assembled by 2 – 4 people in four hours. They are attractive treated wood products with integral handrails and include all hardware and components. Each piece can be carried by two people and assembly requires no special tools or extensive construction experience.
Our modular additions are designed to be attached to existing structures. They are ADA compliant and allow a homeowner to remain in their house while construction is taking place in our plant. On site construction time is reduced from several months to approximately two weeks resulting in less disruption to the occupants.

Our Compact Hero Homes are designed to accommodate full ADA access when required. They are built to North Carolina Modular Building Program standards and are rigorously inspected. We offer many models and we can build to suit if the customer has special requirements.
