Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs – Our Vision and Mission
Helping to connect the Sunshine State’s more than 1.5 million veterans and their families with earned services, benefits and support are the more than 1,100 men and women of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs. They play a major role in the direct infusion of more than $18.4 billion annually for veterans into Florida’s economy through federal compensation, education and pension benefits, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ medical services and military retired pay.
Florida offers unique benefits such as in-state tuition rates for veterans and their families using the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, several layers of property tax exemptions, expanded veterans’ preference, and extensive benefits, licensure and fee waivers for many activities and occupations. We also offer high quality care at our network of seven state veterans’ homes, with two additional homes in development in Port St. Lucie and Orlando.
In 1988, Florida citizens endorsed a constitutional amendment to create the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs as a separate agency charged with providing advocacy and representation for Florida’s veterans and to intercede on their behalf with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Our advocacy increases federal benefits for Florida’s veterans, improves the quality of life for veterans with service-connected disabilities, and provides access to federally funded medical care for eligible veterans.

Genesis Joy House Homeless Shelter, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to ending chronic homelessness among women veterans in the Southeast.
Grace After Fire was first started as The Women’s Heart by Stephanie Moles in 2002, with a focus on increasing access to healthcare services for women Veterans, especially those who struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.
Over time, the leadership of the organization transitioned from Stephanie Moles to retired Air Force Colonel Kim Olson, then to US Navy Veteran Mea Williams.
As Grace After Fire matured, the focus of the organization shifted from the challenges of the woman Veterans to the empowerment of the woman Veteran. Grace After Fire’s mission became centered on helping the woman Veteran help herself by connecting her with the resources and the tools she needs to be a productive citizen in her community, her work and her home after transitioning from the military.
Ever since 2008, Grace After Fire has been serving the Veteran community by providing community resource navigation services, social events, and annual retreats to women Veterans and their families. In 2012, Grace After Fire launched the Table Talk Color Me Camo peer-to-peer support group programming designed specifically for women Veterans, and in 2017, Grace After Fire began providing financial basic needs assistance to women Veterans and her family.

| Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes (FS:FH) is Connecticut’s first and only community-based transitional home exclusively for homeless female Veterans and their young children. Housed at the Nicholas A. Madaras Home, which opened in 2011, FS:FH provides ten beds for female Veterans and four beds, when available, for their young children. Since opening in 2011, the program helps female Veterans by meeting their needs for a safe, secure home, adequate food, and by empowering residents to move forward with their long-term goals: obtaining permanent housing, achieving financial stability, and working toward greater self-determination. |
