The Pets for Vets program is dedicated to providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing them with America’s veterans who can benefit from a companion animal.

Around 920,000 Shelter Animals are Euthanized each year including 390,000 Dogs and 530,000 Cats. These dogs can make excellent companion animals but never have that chance. It is our belief that companion animals can be the life saving therapy or friend that many returning service men and women need.

Medical studies have shown that companion animals significantly improve mental and physical health, including reducing stress, depression and anxiety, symptoms experienced by many serving in the military.

The Pets for Vets team interviews each veteran to ascertain exactly what he or she is looking for in a companion animal; we pair this with his or her personality and lifestyle to make the perfect pet/veteran match. Once the perfect pet is selected for the veteran, he then spends time in the home of our trainer who teaches him basic manners and other valuable behaviors needed to live with his new owner.

Your support helps us match a rescued companion dog (or pet) with an American veteran who would benefit from having a companion. In accomplishing this mission, we do not want to create an additional burden on the veteran; with each dog/veteran match we provide all of the necessary equipment for them to start their new life together. In addition, the pet will be healthy and up to date on all vaccinations. Your donation helps to ensure they have everything they need.

Semper K9 rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to be service dogs at no cost for disabled service members. Semper K9 recently purchased 33 acres adjacent to Marine Corps Base where they plan to build a retreat-style facility for out of area veterans and their families to come and train with their service dogs.

Today, there are over 350,000 service women and 2 million women veterans in the United States – the highest number ever in history. Their voices must be heard. Women have served and fought in every conflict since the American Revolution. Despite their critical contributions to our national security, women continue to face barriers. These barriers exist both in the military and when they leave military service when accessing the VA benefits and services they have earned.

The Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) is the voice of all military women – past, present, and future. We are a member-driven community network advocating for the individual and collective needs of service women. SWAN’s priorities are guided by our members, who include thousands of women and men, service members, and civilians alike.

We are committed to seeing that all service women receive the opportunities, protections, benefits, and respect they deserve. Our goal is to ensure all service women and women veterans have access to the information, tools, and support they need to reach their personal and professional goals.

Since our founding in 2007, SWAN has been the only organization that advocates for and supports the needs of both service women and women veterans, regardless of rank, military branch, or years of experience. With over 40,000 nonprofits in America working to serve the needs of veterans and military personnel, this is an important distinction. While women service members and veterans have benefited from many support programs, the majority of them are still designed, by default, to meet the needs of men. We’re making sure that changes.

SWAN has played a significant role in shaping the outcome of many important issues affecting military women. Our efforts include opening all military jobs to service women, expanding access to services for a broad range of reproductive healthcare services, working to hold sex offenders accountable in the military justice system and eliminating barriers to disability claims for those who have experienced military sexual trauma. But our work is not done.

is a program within the Worklife Institute’s Texas Veterans Program.
We are a community of woman veterans, spouses, caregivers, and survivors, united by the shared

experiences and challenges of military life.

In addition to the programs offered by the Institute, TAMW provides valuable ongoing resources, encouragement, and mentorship.

When you walk through our door we offer you the hospitality of a caring, experienced staff, a full refrigerator, computers, office equipment, and the comfort of your own work environment. The Institute Resource Center is a woman-and family-friendly place.

Our staff is dedicated to a long-term partnership with veterans and their families.
We have 28 years of experience and a wide range of services at your disposal, including career transition, personal and family counseling, legal and financial advisement, training in mediation and
entrepreneurship, outreach events and more.

We welcome all women veterans, spouses, caregivers and survivors in the Southeast Texas (Houston) region to join our community. We will be hosting a variety of workshops and events in an effort to provide relevant bridges of support and encouragement. We are a community coordinated by a Leadership Circle of Women.

That Others May Live Foundation (TOMLF) provides support to the U.S. Air Force Rescue community and their families. We provide full post-secondary education funding to surviving children of fallen Rescue Heroes and merit-based scholarships for children of current and past warriors. In addition, we deliver immediate tragedy assistance funds to aid families and provide visible & invisible wound support to our active duty, veteran warriors, and their families.

Legal Help for Veterans and Families

The Career Development Initiative (CDI) provides targeted career preparation, job placement assistance and job retention services to veterans with a focus on post-9/11 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The program expands veteran employment opportunities by growing the network of employers willing to hire these men and women when they complete their tour of service; identifies veterans’ skill sets so that appropriate career matches can be made; directly connects veterans to private employers; tracks employment for 12 months following placement; and collaborates with other nonprofit providers to achieve the greatest number of veteran placements. CDI is a priority for U.S.VETS as it empowers at-risk veterans to become self-sufficient, reducing the likelihood that they will become homeless.

USO Pathfinder® Transition Program

USO COVID-19 Response: In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, our USO Pathfinder® Transition Program locations are strictly adhering to guidance from military installation commands and abiding by CDC guidance on health safety practices regarding center operations.

We remain steadfast in our mission to support transitioning service members and military spouses. There have been minimal disruptions to one-on-one USO Pathfinder services, as we have shifted Transition Specialist meetings to virtual delivery. Program registration remains open with no disruptions to that process.

The USO Pathfinder® Transition Program extends the USO experience to active duty, Reserve, National Guard and military spouses by offering professional development services throughout the duration of the service member or military spouse’s career, as well as when they transition out of the military and settle into their new communities.

This program offers support to service members up to 6 months after they have officially left service, providing them with resources well along their journey to civilian life.

USO Transition Specialists provide these free services through one on-one support (either virtually, or in person) and help military families create a plan for success now – and for the future.

The VETS Beyond the Uniform program (see Resources below) has been developed by military veterans with the specific goal of helping veterans make a successful journey from the military into the civilian workforce. Vets4Warriors, housed at the Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care National Call Center in New Jersey, is a one-of-a-kind 24/7 peer support network. Originally supported by the National Guard Bureau and the U.S. Department of Defense, today Vets4Warriors operates independently of the U.S. military, complementing official government resources available to service members and veterans. We are committed to ensuring that all veterans, service members, their families, and caregivers always have direct and immediate access to a peer who understands their life experiences and the challenges they face, and can provide support whenever they confront an issue, wherever they are in the world.

The No Veteran Left Behind Program allows disabled heroes who are able to help train their own service dog. They are matched with a dog from a local shelter or if they own a dog, after an evaluation, they might be able to train their own dog.

You may qualify for special services if you served in the military

Here in Washington state, WorkSource helps thousands of military veterans – including disabled veterans – find jobs each year.

As a veteran, you can get priority access to WorkSource services. This includes priority referrals to jobs that are listed with WorkSource, as well as other employment services.

WorkSource centers offer veterans and their military spouses:

Job listings, job referrals and hiring events
Resume, application and interviewing assistance
Use of computers, photocopiers and phones
Skill assessments and referrals to training and other resources

On the WorkSource website, you also can identify yourself as a veteran to make it easier for vet-friendly employers to find you, and you can search for job openings where employers are giving veterans priority over other applicants.

Most WorkSource centers have veteran employment specialists whose sole job is to help military veterans with disabilities and other employment barriers. They’ll assess your skills and interests and help you put together an employment plan that’s right for you.

Washington’s Veterans Military Crosswalk is an easy-to-use tool for translating your military skills to job openings in Washington state. Service men and women simply enter their current Military Occupation Code and the website finds jobs that match their skills and experience. The website also works on mobile devices.
